stock trading journal

This is a breakdown of my stock trading journal that was written within the xBrat® Stocks Predator Dashboard, with image inserts of my journal entries. The stock, $SHAK, was first presented on the confluence scanner from the Stocks Predator Software where all three technical confluences were aligned. Then I put an options trading play together as follows, along with appraisal from Paul Bratby, xBrat®:

11 May 2025 – Stock Trading Journal

  • Stock Analysis: Observed a significant break above $106.37, signaling a potential bullish move.
  • Target: Set a target price range of $127 to $130 based on technical analysis.
  • Key Indicators:
    • High Beta: The stock has a beta of 1.67, indicating higher volatility and potential for amplified moves compared to the market.
    • Confluence: Full alignment on the scanner, with 5 and 6-star xBrat® Algo signals, providing strong confirmation of the bullish setup.
  • Action Plan: Monitor for further confirmation and potential entry opportunities.

  • Price Action: The stock broke through the $112 level, confirming the bullish momentum.

    • Target: Aiming for a double on the option at $125.
  • Rationale: The breakout aligned with the previous technical setup and confluence signals, providing a high-probability trade opportunity.

25 May 2025 – Stock Trading Journal

  • Market Update: The stock appears to be resting after its recent upside move.
  • Current Status:
    • 8 days of consolidation just below the $120 level, indicating a potential pause before the next move.
    • The consolidation suggests the stock is building energy for a possible breakout.
  • Outlook:
    • Still targeting $132, where the weekly resistance zone begins.
    • Watching closely for a breakout this week to confirm the continuation of the bullish trend.

03 June 2025 – Stock Trading Journal

  • Trade Closure: Closed out the SHAK position at $11.05.
  • Reason for Exit:
    • The RSI was high, indicating overbought conditions.
    • The stock had been showing resistance over the past couple of days, signaling a potential reversal or slowdown.
  • Profit: Banked a $710 profit on the trade.
  • Reflection: Exiting at this point was a prudent decision to lock in gains, given the technical signals and resistance levels.

Analysis of Trading Style and Risk Management by Paul Bratby

Trading Style

The trading style reflected in this journal is a technical, momentum-based approach with a focus on high-probability setups. Here are the key characteristics:

  1. Technical Analysis-Driven:
    • Heavy reliance on technical indicators like Xbrat Algo, Roller Coaster signals with confirmation from the xBrat BIAS Depth Heatmap. Along with RSI, and price action levels (e.g., $106.37, $120, $132).
    • Use of confluence from multiple indicators (e.g., scanner signals, beta, and algo ratings) to confirm trade setups.
  2. Momentum and Breakout Trading:
    • Mal capitalized on breakouts (e.g., 11 May and 12 May entries) and momentum-driven moves.
    • Focus on key price levels and catalysts (e.g., tariff talks) to time entries and exits.
  3. Options Trading:
    • Incorporates options strategies to leverage potential upside while managing capital exposure.
    • Example: The August 15, $130 call option with a $3.95 premium and 29 delta reflects a calculated risk-reward setup.
  4. Patience and Timing:
    • Demonstrates patience by waiting for confirmation of setups (e.g., consolidation under $120 before expecting a breakout).
    • Avoids impulsive trades, instead focusing on planned targets and technical signals.
  5. Profit-Taking Discipline:
    • Exits trades when technical signals suggest a reversal or when profit targets are met (e.g., closing SHAK at $128.39 due to high RSI and resistance).

Risk Management

The journal reflects a balanced and disciplined approach to risk management, which is critical for long-term trading success. Here’s how risk is managed:

  1. Defined Entry and Exit Points:
    • Each trade has a clear entry price (e.g., $111.55) and target levels (e.g., $125, $132), ensuring the trader knows when to act.
    • Exits are based on technical signals (e.g., resistance, RSI) or predefined profit targets.
  2. Options for Risk Control:
    • Using options (e.g., $130 call) limits downside risk to the premium paid ($3.95) while allowing for significant upside potential.
    • The 29 delta indicates a moderate probability of the option moving in-the-money, balancing risk and reward.
  3. Profit Lock-In:
    • The trader locks in profits when conditions change (e.g., SHAK trade exit due to resistance and high RSI).
    • This prevents giving back gains in a volatile market.
  4. Position Sizing:
    • The journal doesn’t explicitly mention position sizes, but the use of options suggests a controlled capital allocation to each trade.
    • This approach minimizes exposure to any single trade while leveraging potential gains.
  5. Patience During Consolidation:
    • The trader avoids overtrading during periods of consolidation (e.g., 25 May), waiting for a breakout before committing further capital.
    • This reduces the risk of entering trades during low-probability setups.
  6. Adapting to Market Conditions:
    • The trader adjusts their strategy based on market signals (e.g., exiting SHAK when resistance and RSI indicated a potential reversal).
    • This flexibility helps mitigate losses and protect profits.

Strengths
  • Disciplined Approach: Clear entry, exit, and target levels show a well-thought-out strategy.
  • Risk-Limiting Tools: Use of options and technical signals minimizes downside risk.
  • Patience: Waiting for confirmation and avoiding impulsive trades reduces unnecessary losses.
  • Profit-Taking: Exiting trades at the right time ensures gains are realized.

Areas for Improvement
  1. Documenting Stop-Loss Levels:
    • While targets are well-defined, the journal doesn’t explicitly mention stop-loss levels for trades. Including these would provide a clearer picture of risk management.
  2. Position Sizing Details:
    • Adding information about position sizes or percentage of capital allocated to each trade would enhance the understanding of overall risk exposure.
  3. Broader Market Context:
    • While the journal focuses on individual stocks, incorporating broader market analysis (e.g., sector trends, macroeconomic factors) could improve trade timing and confidence.

Conclusion

The trading style is a disciplined, technical, and momentum-driven approach, with a strong emphasis on risk management through options, profit-taking, and patience. While the journal reflects a solid foundation, adding more details on stop-loss levels and position sizing could further enhance the trader’s ability to manage risk and optimize returns. Overall, this is a well-executed strategy with a clear focus on high-probability setups and capital preservation.
